A once in a lifetime opportunity at Qatar Living
It is 2022. The whole world is talking about just one thing. The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. I was tirelessly applying for jobs until my CV landed at Qatar Living. A writing test and a couple of interviews later, I was hired.
After 5 years of freelancing, working in a corporate environment was a welcome change. It was challenging as I started working just a few weeks before the World Cup. Needless to say there was a learning curve which I mastered through sheer persistence. The exposure and experience was rewarding.
Following the World Cup craze was a period of calm, and I was given the opportunity to publish feature articles and instagram carousels that highlighted some of the best that Qatar has to offer.
My work at Qatar Living was not limited to writing. I was additionally tasked with researching, formulating and compiling content for their social media channels and website while ensuring the content created, generated excellent insights.
The proof is in the pudding. So here’s a list of the tasks I was assigned, along with some of my favorite pieces:
- Coverage of the World Cup qualifying match between France and Denmark

- Providing captions for some of the key events during the Qatar 2022 Word Cup

- Conceptualizing, researching & writing feature articles on Qatar that generated great insights

- Events this week in Qatar
- Must visit farms and nature reserves in Qatar
- Day trip destinations in Qatar
- Writing and editing news stories and press releases

- Preparation of instagram carousels

Captivating copy as a freelancer
Copy translating to sales conversion at Three Gables Boutique Villa
I enjoy anything to do with travelling, and I was delighted to be roped in to conceptualize and write out the content for an up and coming boutique villa in the Southern coast of Sri Lanka. Working remotely, I scheduled phone interviews with the owner, architect and management to understand and encapsulate the beauty of the villa and all it has to offer to its growing customer base.
The end result was a website that captivated its audience. It not only highlighted some of the best features of the villa but also shared tips and tricks to enjoy the best of Sri Lanka, making for a memorable travel experience.
Copy to widen the customer base at Montrela Consultants
Between the years 2019-2022 I formulated the content for the Montrela Consultants website working alongside the organization’s marketing and web development team. Taking their needs into consideration, I conceptualized Montrela’s vision and mission statement and about page along with their different services to help widen their customer base.
In 2022, I also wrote the press release for the Sri Lanka’s first migration expo which Montrela hosted.
First steps at Daily Mirror

I started my writing career as a reporter for the Daily Mirror newspaper in Sri Lanka. Between the years 2013 to 2015, I had the opportunity to witness and write about some of the phenomenal changes taking place in the country. Some of them include the Colombo Urban Regeneration Project, Metro Colombo Urban Development Project and the Urban Transport Master Plan.
I investigated and wrote about a number of these projects with my material drawn from both first hand (project engineers, ministry officials, university professors, those directly affected) and second hand (project plans, statistics and reports) sources.
Over time I learnt the ropes and created my own niche. I mostly worked on stories that revolved around urban & infrastructure development. When opportunities presented itself, I wrote articles on proper environmental management and poverty alleviation. Additionally, I did a couple of travel and launch reviews for the Daily Mirror Life magazine, but nearly a year after joining the news desk, I saw myself as a fully fledged news reporter.
Attached below are links to some of the articles I wrote while working at the news desk.
